『I’ll Mature When I’m Dead』
今月の一冊目は、Dave Barryの久々の新作、「I’ll Mature When I’m Dead」(最も、Ridney Pearsonとの共作はコンスタントに出ていたんですけどね）。15ページくらいのエッセイが並んでいる感じなので、読みやすいはず。内容はこんな感じ。
When a man reaches a certain point in his life, he feels a need to pass along the wisdom he has gained to younger generations. Of course the younger generations pay no attention; they’re busy tweeting podcast YouTube blog apps on Facebook, or whatever the hell they’re doing these days.
But if the Internet ever goes down and the younger generations have some spare time, I hope they read this book. It’s a group of essays I wrote, mostly based on the theme of what it means to be an adult.
『Murder of a Bookstore Babe』
2冊目はDenise Swansonの「Murder of a Bookstore Babe」。これは学校や学区のためにはたらいている心理学者（School Psychologist＝学校診療士）の主人公、Skye Denisonが開業を楽しみにしていた、新しい本屋に絡んで殺人事件が起こる、という話です。文章はこういう感じ。
When Skye Denison saw an ad in the local newspaper announcing Tales and Treat’s grand opening that weekend, she was thrilled. For a voracious reader like Skye, the luxury of having shelves and shelves of new, used, and rare books for sale just five minutes from home was nirvana. And the promise of specialty coffees, gourmet teas, and yummy pastries just added to her elation.
What she didn’t realize was that the store had already managed to ruffle the fur of several of Scumble River’s most vocal citizens. She should have known there’d be some kind of fuss about any new business that set up shop in her prickly hometown.
Like cats, the inhabitants of the small tight-knit community weren’t partial to change, and they often showed their displeasure in spiteful and destructive ways. While the old-timers probably wouldn’t pee in the interlopers’ shoes, they might very well produce some obscure law that made their kind of footwear taboo.
各章のタイトルが文学作品のタイトルになっているのも楽しいですよ。第1章が「For Whom the Bell Tolls」、第2章が「The Sound and the Fury」、第3章が「Remembrance of Things Past」、邦題分かりますか？
