『Just One More Thing』
(Peter Falk)

まず1冊目は、Peter Falkの「Just One More Thing」。

I’ve been asked a few thousand times how much of Columbo is Falk and vice versa. For years I’ve had a stock answer “I’m just as sloppy as the lieutenant but not nearly as smart.” That was a quickie response for the media. They’re drawn to anything that takes less than five seconds.
The truth is, no one is like Columbo. He’s unique — if he were up for auction, he would be described as “One of a kind — a human with the brain of Sherlock Holmes who dresses like the homeless.”

『What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20』
(Tina Seelig)

2冊目はTina Seeligの「What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20」。

What would you do to earn money if all you had was five dollars and two hours? This is the assignment I gave students in one of my classes at Stanford University. Each of fourteen teams received an envelope with five dollars of “seed funding” and was told they could spend as much time as they wanted planning. However, once they cracked open the envelope, they had two hours to generate as much money as possible. I gave them from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday evening to complete the assignment. Then, on Sunday evening, each team had to send me one slide describing what they had done, and on Monday afternoon each team had three minutes to present their project to the class. They were encouraged to be entrepreneurial by identifying opportunities, challenging assumptions, leveraging the limited resources they had, and by being creative.

『A Deadly Cliche』
(Ellery Adams)

今月はEllery Adamsの「A Deadly Cliche」を。

The slick-haired weatherman assured that although the storm was likely to organize and grow in force, it would remain out at sea, allowing for a perfect Labor Day weekend for those heading to the beach.

“Jackass,” the fisherman’s voice rumbled like distant thunder. He rubbed a calloused, leathery hand over his lined face as though he could wipe away the other man’s erroneous words. “Don’t matter how much fancy equipment these boys get. They don’t understand a damned thing ‘bout balance. We’re due for a big one and we’re witnessin’ her beginning right here and now on that TV screen. I feel it in my bones. It’s a comin’.”
