『Switch』
(Chip & Dan Heath)

Switch

Chip & Dan Heathの「Switch」。

Sternin had read as much as he could about the malnutrition problem. The conventional wisdom was the malnutrition was the result of an intertwined set of problems: Sanitation was poor. Poverty was nearly universal. Clean water was not readily available. The rural people tended to be ignorant about nutrition.

In Sternin’s judgment, all of this analysis was “TBU — true but useless.” “Millions of kids can’t wait for those issues to be addressed,” he said. If addressing malnutrition required ending poverty and purifying water and building sanitation systems, then it would never happen. Especially in six months, with almost no money to spend.

『Agatha Raisin and the Day the Floods Came』
(M.C. Beaton)

Agatha Raisin and the Day the Floods Came

Beatonの「Agatha Raisin and the Day the Floods Came」です。

Agatha Raisin was born in a tower block slum in Birmingham and christened Agatha Styles. No middle names. Agatha had often longed for at least two middle names such as Caroline or Olivia. Her parents, Joseph and Margaret Styles, were both unemployed and both drunks. They lived on benefits and the occasional bout of shoplifting.

Agatha attended the local comprehensive as a rather shy and sensitive child but quickly developed a bullying, aggressive manner so that the other pupils would steer clear of her.

At the age of fifteen, her parents decided it was time she earned her keep and her mother found her work in a biscuit factory, checking packets of biscuits on a conveyer belt for any faults.
